Bright round doors in summery hues dot the lush, grassy hillsides of Hobbiton like wildflowers. Behind each doorway, comfortably appointed burrows wind into earth: each one home to a hobbit, or a family of the Shire's rosy-cheeked little-folk. Every hobbit-hole is unique, expressing the personality of its inhabitants with colour and prettily adorned with gardens, furniture, and the rustic debris of everyday life. The abiding atmosphere of Bag End itself is one of lazy comfort, from the pretty but slightly overgrown gardens that hug its eaves to the welcoming clutter inside it labyrinthine chambers. Sprawling around the Hill beneath the shade of an old oak tree whose roots twist through its halls, the grand smial reflects the gentle good humour of its hosts and the universal Hobbit love of simple pleasures. For a Wizard whose errands took him all over Middle-earth, the sleepy hills and quiet hamlets of the Shire were a sanctuary. Strolling between verdant hedgerows and bursting gardens, Gandalf the Grey enjoyed the company of the Hobbits living there: a gentle people of naïve eccentricities, and makers of the finest pipe weed in all the lands. On a fine evening Gandalf might be found sitting outside Bag End with Bilbo or Frodo Baggins, pipes in hand, blowing smoke rings which the Wizard brought to life with subtle magic. The Pipe of Gandalf the Grey was created for The Lord of the Rings by the artists at the 3Foot6 Art Department, and comes complete with Tamper. This non-functional prop replica has been created from molds of the original prop used in the film, using the same high impact urethane material as the props on set and finished using the same techniques and materials to achieve the same well-loved look as it has in the film. During the production of The Lord of the Rings, Weta Workshop was tasked with helping to build up the very foundations of how Middle-earth was to appear on screen. From the largest of towers to the smallest of Hobbit holes, countless sketches were made detailing every aspect, and although not every concept saw its way onto the big screen, each piece played an important role in exploring the world it belonged to. For the very first time, Weta Workshop is proud to have the opportunity to bring a piece of Middle earth to life, that until now only existed on paper: The Key to Bag End. It takes hundreds of hours to design, sculpt model make, mold, and paint the prototype for each new Middle-earth piece. Whether it be a prop replica, beautiful environment, or iconic character, we treat our collectibles with the same level of care and attention to detail that we bring to our film work.
