In this moment, the Phoenix Force took Jean’s form, creating a duplicate of her body and absorbing her memories, and then it cast the real Jean Grey into suspended animation in a strange cocoon in the bottom of the Jamaica Bay waters. Believing to be the real Jean, Phoenix fought alongside the X-Men and saved the universe. But when manipulated by the mutant villain Jason Wyngarde, known as the Mastermind, Phoenix went mad and became the universal threat called The Dark Phoenix. Jean was rescued from her stasis, and after a while, other factors led her to possess a spark of consciousness and residual energy of the Phoenix.
