Assassin’s Creed returns with the introduction of Origins, the 10th edition of the award-winning games. Here, the series gets a lick of paint and the biggest changes ever seen in the franchise. Couple this with Microsoft’s stunning Xbox One and it’s shaping up to be an incredible addition to the franchise.
Travel to Ancient Egypt as Assassin’s Creed visits the land of pharaohs and pyramids for the first time. Set in the Ptolemaic period, Origins looks into the start of a conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins. Their sole purpose is to bring peace by the promotion of liberty, whereas the predecessors to the Templar Order desire peace through sinister means.
Utilising the very same third-person perspective that has now become synonymous with the franchise, gamers in Origins will have to complete a series of quests in a unique and gorgeously realised open-world environment in which you can traverse pyramids and the locality on horseback and interact with wild animals.
Speaking of which, a new feature to Origins does away with the ‘eagle vision’ mode that has become a mainstay of the franchise. Instead, players will have access to a dedicated eagle companion called Senu. Using Senu, players are then able to scout locations for enemies from the sky, alerting your character to their presence.
Elsewhere, gamers can tame and train a selection of wild animals to then use as companions. When it comes to gameplay, Origins will see a return of tomb raiding, as well as naval battles and underwater exploration to the franchise, though climbing taller structures will be limited in a departure for the series.
So, with a beautiful new location to explore, Origins also sees a new combat system coming into the fray. The ‘hit-box’ system as it’s been described will allow players to strike at whatever is in range, whether that be antagonists, animals or solid objects. When it comes to hitting enemies, gamers can now assault a specific body part or miss entirely, giving a more realistic fighting style.
After release day, players will be able to explore the vast open world of Assassin’s Creed Origins with no objectives, taking in the sights and sounds of Ancient Egypt without worrying about completing missions and battling enemies. An added element to this is the ability to undertake guided tours that take in important aspects of Egyptian history.
